Thomas J. Charlton family papers, MS 1857-1920.

This collection consists of 25 items arranged in chronological order. The first items are Charlton II's commission as surgeon with the United States navy and an invitation to his wedding. The majority of the collection consists of letters to Charlton II from his wife, Julia, his father-in-law, Horace Averill Crane, Felix Senac, and his sister "Pussie" (Eileen Charlton). Subjects include family matters, conditions in Savannah during the Civil War, Charlton II's pay, and the assassination of Lincoln. The collection also includes a child's letter from Tattnall Charlton to his mother, letters to Dr. and Mrs. Charlton III presenting dishes, a bill for hats, a letter of condolence on the death of Charlton III, the calling card for an envoy of the King of Belgium, poetry, and a scrapbook primarily containing newspaper clippings.

Dr. Thomas J. Charlton II (1833-1886) graduated from the Savannah Medical College in 1856. In 1857, he was appointed as a surgeon in the United States Navy. He married Julia Crane (1837-1882) in 1860. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Charlton resigned his commission and joined the Confederate States Navy, serving aboard the commerce raider Florida.
